Kahne and Westheimer: A Reflection
"Educators and legislators alike maintain that service learning can improve the community and invigorate the classroom, providing rich educational experiences for students at all levels of schooling." This quote explains what the reading is going to be able, service learning. There are benefits of service learning, like providing experiences that are important for students to come across in order to see things from a different perspective. I think it is also important to use service learning in the curriculum because it shows the students something outside of what they know. Whether it's feeding the homeless, community plans, or volunteering at a pet shelter, it's showing the kids something from a different perspective. I think it helps the students see outside their privilege because they are experiencing other people getting help from the community, something the students might not need.
I can connect this to our class. I'm participating in service learning right now with my internship at Arlington Elementary School. This is like something I've never done before. This is an act of service learning because with this, I'm an active participant in service projects. This is helping my classroom, but also providing me with the academic goals that I need to meet. This experience is giving me the experience that I need as a teacher. I am helping out in a diverse, low socioeconomic school, somewhere I've never been. This is having a positive impact on my academics, because I'm living in the reading we're talking about, like the ones about race, and class. It is also helping me look outside my privilege because I'm working with less privileged students and forcing myself to take a look in their own shoes.
